Mel will announce the winner Fridays (Nov 30, Dec 7, and Dec 14) on the Drive Home.
Mel’s Swiss Chalet story is that the famous Festive Special saved her and Boyfriend during a Winter storm!
“We were in the middle of moving from one home to another and our move-in was delayed because of the weather. A Winter storm came up and we had a moving truck full of belongings, a storage locker full of belongings, and empty tummies. We were wet, cold, and tired. Swiss Chalet in New Minas was open and we knew that’s where we needed to take our break. We enjoyed hot, delicious soup and Festive Special quarter chicken dinners. Our kind server made sure we were never without a hot beverage in our hands. We felt taken care of. We didn’t have a dinner table to call our own that night, but we had Swiss Chalet. We walked in cold and exhausted and left smiling, warm, and happy.”
From Nancy Saunders: (WINNER OF DRAW ON NOV 30!)
“We got married this past summer at our family cottage in New Ross! We instantly contacted Rob Graves to see about catering all the way to New Ross, as we are a family of fans of Swiss Chalet. We wondered about how and if the food would still be hot, also how it would all be set up, served etc. Rob and his team made it all so seamless and wonderful! Very professional and the food was delicious and piping hot! Everyone said the meal was amazing and the best catered wedding that most had been too. I highly recommend them for any event or just a meal out.”
From Nicole Pitre: (WINNER OF DRAW ON DEC 7!)
“Every year at this time when I was a little girl my mom would take me to swiss chalet as part of our annual Christmas shopping trip. I don’t remember details of each trip aside from the Toblerone or now the Lindt chocolate what I do recall with great fondness is the feeling of excitement and joy to have this special time just me and my Mom. Over the years she has been my rock no matter what so 4 weeks ago I flew to Ontario to help my Mom sell and move her house to Nova Scotia, she now lives with my partner and I here in the valley. Whether I win or not I think it is my turn to share that joy with her and take her out for our annual treat.”
From Kayla Mansfield:
“I’m originally from Liverpool, and am now proud to call the Valley my home along with my husband and 4 children for the past 8 years. I noticed that many include the long standing tradition of the Festive Special at Swiss Chalet around the Holidays. Our kids are now 11, 5, 3, and our latest addition arrived in September. My husband and I have been talking a lot about traditions that we can start with the kids. The 3 oldest are now old enough to understand the concept and importance of Holiday traditions, and he mentioned that a nice sit down meal all together would be a great idea. Not only is this something we could do as a family each year as our kids grow up together, but also as something we could do together after they’re grown….maybe even after they have kids and separate lives of their own. This is the perfect year to start a tradition that we could carry on for many years to come. Thanks, and Happy Holidays to everyone at 89.3 K-Rock, and Swiss Chalet in New Minas!!”
From Ginette Pitcher:
“I have many fond memories of spending time at Swiss Chalet as a kid. My family and my 3 cousin’s family in Dartmouth met at Swiss Chalet many times growing up. We would always order “Super Sundays” or sometimes a cherry pie for dessert (neither of which are on the menu these days). A gathering of 9 people at a restaurant was always a great time! Now I have my own kids and we go to Swiss Chalet fairly regularly. Perhaps the funniest story I have of these more recent times is that I have pictures of both of my kids as babies/toddlers asleep with their heads on the table of a Swiss Chalet. I expect we will make many more memories at Swiss Chalet for years to come.”
From Kate Hill:
“October 2017, my husband and I were married on October 7th (Thanksgiving weekend), which meant, no thanksgiving dinner as it was such a busy weekend. October 2018, my sister and her husband were married on October 6th (Thanksgiving weekend), which meant, no thanksgiving dinner as it, again, was such a busy weekend. Both years, we enjoyed our own thanksgiving dinner at Swiss Chalet. No mess to clean up afterwards, no long prep time, but still, we were able to enjoy a nice thanksgiving meal with friends and family, and had so very much to celebrate. Always feel like family when dining at Swiss Chalet.”
From Bruce Reid:
“As a family Christmas tradition my wife and I take our two adult children and their families out to dine at Swiss Chalet and have done so since this restaurant came to N.S. We started with the one on Kempt Rd. in Halifax. Now that we have extended families with grand children involved in a variety of sports which we try to take part we we find ourselves travelling the circuit of towns which all have close proximities to S.C. locations, so where ever we are we take in the location, most recently in New Minas as we watch a game in Berwick. There must be a well organized formal training agenda as all locations have the same smiling faces ready and willing to serve the best restaurant chicken around. Keep up the excellent dining experience. Merry Christmas to one and all.”
From Angel Kozlowski:
“Last year I took my daughter and her boyfriend to Swiss Chalet before prom. Everyone was all dressed up in their fancy prom clothes. Our food came out super fast, with a friendly lady, and while we were eating and chatting we started talking about how clumsy I am and how I would have spilled something on my dress by that time, and bam. My daughter spilled her drink all over the table, floor and a bit on her dress. The waitress was very quick to come and help clean up, she was not upset with us for the spill. No clothing was ruined, we had a good laugh, finished our meal and went to prom. It was a great before prom story.
From Emilie Desveaux-Starratt:
“Several years ago, we went out to Swiss Chalet to celebrate my birthday with the extended family. The restaurant was quite full that day and we were enjoying lots of good conversations and family chatter. Way off from the kitchen we could hear some singing and everyone turned around to see the staff singing “I don’t know but I’ve been told, someone here is getting old”…. I thought it was hilarious and was looking around to see which table they were heading to, completely forgetting that it was my birthday! There were lots of laughs and I thoroughly enjoyed enjoy my birthday surprise at Swiss Chalet in New Minas.”
From Matt Piggot:
“Well, where do I start?
I first started working at Swiss Chalet when I was 16 years old. I started as a dish washer and worked my way up the ladder to become a Supervisor. I had met a beautiful server named Ashley a few years into my career and well.. let’s just skip forward to the part where Swiss Chalet has been a part of every significant event in our lives since then.
1. Yes; I married that server named Ashley. She is now my wife of 5 years, together for alkoar 9 years. Swiss Chalet catered our wedding.
2. We then bought a house. We had Swiss Chalet that night to celebrate.
3. We bought another house when we outgrew our first one. We celebrated with Swiss Chalet that night again. Then we had some more at our house warming party. Yes I’ve tried everything on the menu.
4. We now have a baby boy on the way. Know how we announced it to the world? We took a picture of two adult menus and one kids menu with crayons in between..yes..at Swiss Chalet.
Although we have both moved on to other careers and are no longer at Swiss Chalet it will forever hold a special place in our hearts. The people we met and worked along side with some we still call friends; we will always cherish the memories. We still frequent Swiss Chalet at least a couple times a month. Maybe a couple more times a month when the festive is in town. Gimme some of those Lindor chocolates!
Love you Ash :)”
From Ray Savage:
“It was a super hectic day & I had not had anything to eat since breakfast. There was a movie playing I wanted to see, but was running late. Thought maybe, just maybe I could pop into Swiss Chalet as they are usually pretty quick. Well this particular evening they were slammed. Explained to my server that I was trying to make a movie that started in a half hour. He said he’d look after me. In less than 5 minutes my dinner was in front of me and made the movie with some time to spare. Swiss Chalet New Minas rocks….”
From Tim Hunt:
“My Swiss story is more then just a visit for lunch or supper on a rainy day. I had the chance to experience first hand how amazing the staff is as I worked next door at Harvey’s for 2 years. Obviously in that time I had some great food but to me seeing and being apart of how close everyone is through out the whole year is special. It’s not just a restaurant it’s two restaurants with many great people that are family to each other and their customers.”
From Monique Boulanger:
“I was living in Hamilton, dirt poor, was only able to afford rent so any Christmasey anything was not happening. I didn’t have any kids so Christmas hampers were not available. My landlord, gave me a coupon for a free festive special along with $20 to cover delivery and tip.
It was the nicest thing ever. Made my meager holiday a bit brighter that year.”
From Karla Serino:
“Christmas time going up in my family was very special, we would celebrate our family Christmas on the 24th and than pack up the van (cat included) and travel 3 hrs to Toronto (I grew up in Ontario) and than stay with my wonderful Nanna and Poppa. All 9 of us would go to Swiss Chalet on the 24th (my Poppa’s treat) and I would order the festive special (for many years the Toblerone chocolate was included) and we would be able to have a pop, which was really special, than we would attend Christmas eve service at my Nanna and Poppa’s church. We did not miss a year, I did this from age 4 to age 21. My Poppa has since passed away but the memories of going to Swiss Chalet still live on when I tell my children about their Great Grandpoppa.”
From Carrie Dorman:
“So there were 4 of us heading out for a weekday work diner…we went to a well known restaurant (I will keep the name private). After being seated we ordered our drinks (2 ice teas & 2 waters). We all pondered the menu and realized that we were not in the mood for anything there. We decided it was best to go elsewhere but how could we just walk out?!!! I suggested one of the ladies pretend to receive a call & tell the server had to leave. We paid for the ice teas (and the cost was crazy so we got them to go)…”where should we go now” we wondered…the road led us to Swiss Chalet 😀 and we filled our bellies with the best dinner ever….we still laugh at what we did…its these kinds of memories worth sharing….”
From Cynthia Biggs:
